Before: Perspective drawing project
After:
The name of this piece is just simply Dunkin Donut Munchkins and I sculpted these using clay. The assignment was to pick any food and then replicate it. I used an actual box from Dunkin Donuts that they use to hold the Munchkins to make the piece look more realistic and then just placed in on a wooden plank. The first thing I notice when I look at the piece is how realistic the powdered doughnuts look. The sculpting portion of this only took me about two days. I rolled chunks of clay, the size of the ones from Dunkin Donuts, and then shaped them into looking less round. After that, I put holes in the bottom. Since each individual doughnut really wasn't think enough for a problem to occur in the kiln, I didn't have to make the holes too big. The painting part of the project took a few days longer. I designated a day to almost each type of doughnut. I painted all of the plain glazed doughnuts, the jelly doughnuts, and the sprinkled doughnuts the solid brownish color in one day, and the same day I began adding color to the sprinkles. This took up the rest of class and the whole class period the next day because there are so many and they're so tiny. I also added red to the jelly on the jelly doughnuts on the same day. These were all glazed. The following day I did the white powdered doughnuts. I painted them, with a acrylic paint, a very, very light shade of grey and then used a sponge and white acrylic paint to get the powdery texture. I also used the same sponge and white acrylic paint technique for the tops of the jelly doughnuts. I saved explaining the chocolate doughnuts for last, even though they were done on separate days, for a specific reason. I did glaze them at first. I used the darkest brown that was available to me, but after it came out of the kiln..it really wasn't the dark color I wanted. After using the sponge technique on the powdered and jelly doughnuts, though, it gave me an idea of doing the same on the chocolate ones. So I mixed brown and a little bit of black together to get the dark color i had originally wanted and then used the sponge to give it a better look. The only problem i really faced, which wasn't too bad of one, was the chocolate not looking right at first. My skills did improve in doing this, there is a difference between my Art 1 sculpting and this years. It may be just because last year we didn't go as in depth with learning about sculpting compared to this year. I am pretty proud of the way this piece came out and think I deserved an A because I completed every part of the assignment successfully.
I think the colors of the doughnuts are pretty precise. Tho only one that doesn't look as realistic as the rest is the regular glazed doughnuts. Its the right color, shine from glazing them makes them look good, but they don't really have the texture of an actual glazed doughnut. To add more of a texture I maybe could have shaped those specific doughnuts a little differently, like made them a little bumpy to make them look like they had glaze on them. The texture for the rest of them looks pretty exact, especially for the powdered doughnuts. I think this sculpture replicates what munchkins would look like falling out of a box. I sent pictures to family members and friends who didn't know about the project and they said things like "five second rule" and "omg give me one," so yes, I really do think this looks very realistic.
I don't think someone looking at this piece would get bored. It has so many details and looks so realistic that it keeps you wanting to look at it. It's something to be looked at slowly so you can take in and study the details. People would most likely be intrigued by the textures of the doughnuts and be curious of how it was done.
This sculpture gives off a good vibe. I used happy and bright colors and it will most likely make people feel happy. Also, it is food (very tasty food may I add) which could make somebody feel hungry I guess. Plus...who doesn't like doughnuts?? Especially munchkins! I anticipate, and would hope, people thinking looks very realistic, but I don't really know how people are going to feel about it. Maybe they don't like doughnuts (smh). I would really like people to look at this and leave thinking "dang....I really want some munchkins right now."
I feel my piece was well done, but, like explained, there are things that I would have liked to have done differently to make it better (making the glazed doughnuts look more realistic, etc.).
