These are my sketches for my up close nature project. I tried out a few different mediums to see which one I liked best. I tried using oil pastel, colored pencil, and watercolor pencil. Honestly I did not like any of them, but then I tried doing a few of them again and decided that oil pastel would be a good choice. I am going to draw the image on the top right (of the left page) because I like the way it is cropped and how it is very simple. Also, I chose to do that image because the other two images have a lot of detailing in the center of the flower and I dont think i would be able to do a good job on all that detailing with oil pastels.
We practiced different techniques in class using colored pencil. We worked on really pushing darks and lights. I enjoyed using colored pencil and would like to improve with blending colors better.
The image on the top is watercolor and the image below is watercolor pencil. I did not enjoy watercolor very much because I found it difficult blending with colors. But i did really enjoy watercolor pencil because of the way they blend.
We had to draw a soda can in class using oil pastels. I did not get to finish mine, but I was still able to learn techniques and how to put value into the colors using different colors. It was a little difficult using this medium (and messy), but I still enjoyed the challenge and liked blending colors together.
We practiced techniques using chalk pastels in class. We had to make an apple and use different colors to add value to it.
In class we did shape shading. I shaded a sphere, cone, and triangular prism. We also shaded a value scale using 6B and HB pencils.
I developed my Art Making Skills:
During this project I was able to improve my shading skill with pencils. There were certain parts of the drawing where I had to shade super dark and and some where I did not shade anything at all. I was able to practice a wider range of value and develop skills in making a smoother transition from light to dark. Also knowing when to make things bolder and where to highlight parts to make the drawing look more realistic was something I was able to improve on. I Take Risks: I took a risk with this project because drawing books stacked in a perspective manner was something I wasn't really comfortable with. As I was drawing my draft I wasn't sure if it was what I really wanted to draw. I didn't like the way it was turning out and I was finding it difficult to get right. I ended up drawing it anyway because I thought it would make me better drawing something I was uncomfortable with. I had never really learned how to correctly draw in perspective until now and I was actually not unhappy with how it came out. I was glad I chose something that I thought was difficult because if I chose something I was more comfortable with than I would not have improved. We Collaborate: During this process I asked a few of my friends and Ms. Rossi questions. I got suggestions from my friends about what parts they thought I needed to shade more. Ms. Rossi was able to help me out with a few lines being correctly in perspective. Also, she gave me advice on how to draw some things dealing with the "Wicked" book because I had a little bit of a difficult time with that. Lastly, Ms. Rossi was the one who told me I needed to make the outlines of the books more bold and she told me where to add some highlights in. Asking questions from my peers allowed me to better my artwork and learn more for future projects. This is an in progress image of my final draft. I tried to go as dark and as light as i could. I was sure to outline all my books, words, etc., so that they were very bold and defined. I also added highlights in some areas, this way it was obvious where the light source was coming from. The placement of the outline of the books also show much better perspective than my rough draft did. I have not yet finished the "Wicked" book yet, but I am going to add much more detail to the image of the witch. I also think I need to round off the edges of the books a little more because they look too sharp and it makes it look a little less realistic.
This is the rough draft of my perspective project. So far all of my books and the perspective part of the project is coming out right. I am not very pleased with the shading of my draft. I think I am going to have to add darker darks and even lighter lights. So, basically I am going to have to make sure that I have a larger range of value. Also I will have to be sure to add more detail on the "Wicked" book and do a better job on the letters.
