This is an in progress of my clay food. I am doing doughnut holes. I bought a box of doughnut holes from Duncan Doughnuts, this way I can use the box to lay my clay doughnuts in (and to eat some munchkins :P). The doughnuts with the dots on them are sprinkled doughnuts. There are some that have some clay sticking off of them, this way i can make jelly doughnuts. I also made some of them small, specifically for the chocolate doughnuts. I noticed the chocolate ones are typically smaller and rounder than the rest. Fortunately, I did not have to do any scorching and slipping. Even for the sprinkled ones Ms. Sudkamp said it was okay because the sprinkles are so small. I do enjoy the clay part of the project, but i think i am especially exited to paint them and attempt to make them look really realistic.
I Take Risks:
I have never used oil pastels other than just messing around with them, so I was kind of hesitant to use them. It took me a lot of going back and forth in deciding what medium I wanted to use, mainly because I'm not really familiar with many of these mediums at all. I have used colored pencil in the past and that was one of the ideas I had of using, but I thought it would be better if I tried something new. So I chose oil pastels and I did a sketch of it on a smaller piece of paper to see if it was what I really wanted to do. At first I wasn't really sure how I felt about the way it was turning out, but as I got into it and kept blending colors I started to enjoy the process more and the way it was looking. I'm glad I decided to stick with it and practice my skills using a new medium. We Collaborate: I used my peers a lot during this project, mostly because I'm not used to oil pastel and was unsure if I was using them correctly. They were able to give me a lot of tips to how I could better my piece. Mia told me to fade on the inside of the petals this way it would look like they were separated more and so it would look more realistic. Other people at that table helped me decide the background color and where I should lighten things up etc. Ms. Rossi was able to help me also. She told me to add highlights and to darken up the inside of the petals as well. Having people to constructively criticize my work allows me to get better and improve any of my art skills. I Reflect: I stepped back and analyzed my work many times throughout this project. I mostly did it when I didn't like the way it was looking or when I made minor mistakes. When I made minor mistakes it was easier to get through because I would just fix the rest of the flower or petal according to the mistake. When I didn't like the way it was turning out I got frustrated because of my un-familiarness to knowing what oil pastel pieces are supposed to look like. If i didn't like it I would make the decision to either take a little break for a few minutes this way I could find a way to fix it to where I would like it or I would just continue go on with it knowing that it would get better as I went. This is my final sketch for my project. I chose to do oil pastels and I really wanted to try it out on a bigger piece of paper to see if I really liked it. I think i could do a better job on my final adding white, for highlights, and maybe go even darker with the blue. I really like using this medium because of the way it blends. For the second petal I think I could do a much better job blending and adding more dark colors. The two blue and the black are on the page because I was trying to decide which background I liked the best. It was really between the dark blue and the black, which is what I ended up going with.
These are my sketches for my up close nature project. I tried out a few different mediums to see which one I liked best. I tried using oil pastel, colored pencil, and watercolor pencil. Honestly I did not like any of them, but then I tried doing a few of them again and decided that oil pastel would be a good choice. I am going to draw the image on the top right (of the left page) because I like the way it is cropped and how it is very simple. Also, I chose to do that image because the other two images have a lot of detailing in the center of the flower and I dont think i would be able to do a good job on all that detailing with oil pastels.
