I Create Original Art:
For this project I obviously used Rene Magritte as my source of inspiration, but I used other things as well. For example, I had found pictures of different things like an empty room and had used the floor of that room for the floor of my room, just darker and with less detail. For the frame of the picture on the wall I also found a picture and was originally going to do a similar detailed frame, but then decided to go more simple because that is how a lot of Magritte's paintings are, so I just got the idea of gold from the picture i found. For the ocean, I sort of just went with whatever and just did it with out a guide, I did go for a more simplistic look (again) because in many of Magritte's paintings with water in the background, it is simply just one color for the ocean and very little amount of waves throughout. So I found many things to use and help me acquire my own ideas for the painting and then I just put them together. The color of the wall was either going to be a light pink or a purplish (like it is now), inspired by the color of a room in my own home.
I Communicate Through My Work:
One major thing that really bothered me when I was finished with my painting is how the paintings on the wall are kind of crooked, or slanted. It was something I noticed as I was painting, but had decided I would leave it to fix for the end. When I finished I was decided what to do in order to fix the issue and actually ended up deciding I liked the way it looked. The irony of this painting is that i'm really not communicating through my work. Rene Magritte's goal for his paintings was to confuse the mind of the viewer, to make them think, and to come up with their own explanation for what the painting is trying to communicate to you. I allowed this to be the goal of my own painting as well. And with that in mind I ended up keeping the slanted-ness of the painting as it was to add to the confusion of the painting.
We Collaborate:
During the process of this painting I used my peers for feedback on the color for the wall of the painting. I had a few colors in mind. They were a light shade of pink, a light shade of purple, or a deep shade of purple. The idea of a light shade really did't appeal to me very much because you don't typically see rooms those colors (the pink and purple) unless it is in a bedroom. Even though the light shades could have been a good idea because of the all the darks the painting already has in it, it just wasn't the look i was going for and my peers agreed and helped me to decide. So I went with the deep purple for the wall of the painting due the more natural or typical color. And because i really liked the way the color looked with the wood floor and the color of the ocean. My peers also helped me with the decision of wether or not I should have done just a gold frame or a more detailed frame. The decision of doing a frame without detail was chosen because it had the more simple look that Magritte has in his paintings.
